Curvy Lady

This is the first oil painting I did in 2000. This painting is filled with seduction, shyness, un-sureness, attention-seeking and timidity. I express my desires and thoughts through paintings, and I completed this painting while getting over a brain injury.

The world was upside down and I felt as if nobody saw me on campus, which is where I painted it. Venus is the mythological goddess in Rome, Italy, and I painted her because at this stage we were focusing on master painters and a lot of that was centered around European painters. I was being taught of the beauty of the male body, the caucasian male body, and I decided to show that the woman’s body was indeed beautiful as well. A woman’s body that was more curvy than the caucasian lady that actually posed for the painting.

On the perimeter of the painting there are hands reaching out to touch her, as they desired her.

In the Caribbean where I am from, the men pay much more attention to women and will say hi every time they see you and try to talk. I was now in an environment where it was as if I walked around like a cardboard, because men didn’t talk to women.

This painting would do well in an adult bedroom over the headboard of a bed. The oil gives off a sultry feeling that relaxes one and allows all to become relaxed in it’s surrounding.
